Our home is incredibly important, not only for keeping us safe and warm but for keeping us happy to. Most people except maybe a few students across the country, are often incredibly house proud. After all, there is nothing better than coming home after a hard days work and relaxing in a calm, tidy environment. But why stop at tidy, home furnishings and decoration can be really simple do and purchase. It can also cost less than might think and can have a huge effect on your mood each day, so why not change a few things or a whole room and see what it can do for you. Here we shall be looking at some small tips to furnish and decorate your home like a professional.
Firstly, decoration and home furnishing does not to have be hugely expensive, you can buy new furnishings and keep the old to keep a good mix. Traditionally when decorating, the decorator decides upon a style they want to continue in some parts of the house. Some of these styles are Traditional, Contemporary and Cottage. You can also stretch to geographical styles as well such as French and Oriental, or eras like Victorian or Art Deco.
When decorating your room make sure that everything is in proportion to one another by placing the large pieces of furniture in your living space. If it is possible keep tall items such as bookcases and grandfather clocks across the room from one another as this stops the room from looking lopsided. Then add in smaller pieces such as tables in the spaces between that look both aesthetically pleasing and more importantly are convenient. If you have small home furnishings or decorative objects always group them in odd numbers, one, three or five.
Regarding colour in decoration colours such as white, brown, cream, blue and green are all considered neutral. The colour black is considered grounding and should be left for smaller pieces. Large walls look better with a lighter colour but painting a darker shade opposite creates a dramatic effect. Colours of walls can bring new life to paintings and wall hangings and always remember if you don't like it you can always repaint over it.
Floor coverings can be out of wood, stone, tile or carpet but the best way to add texture to these is to add throw rugs to create variation. Rugs can protect wood from scuffing and other marks though so can be very practical.
Accents can include your home furnishings such as small decorative pieces and those of personal interest. These parts make your home individual and can show to visitors your interests if you have a particular collection. Keep them all together to highlight how unique that they are. Small collections can be presented on a tray to look more attractive. Any flat items can be placed on the wall, which can be helpful if you have limited space available.
One cheap way of changing the style of a room is to throw a rug over a sofa, you can choose colours that compliment the room and this is a good way of adapting a sofa or chair. They also add more texture to a room and warmth.
Lighting is also quite important in the home light coloured shades can create a feeling of ambience within a room and table lamps can highlight small objects such as china and other knick-knacks. Other than that it is usually your individual pieces that create an eclectic look to a house and that look is certainly the most inviting.
